DOD Identifies Marine Casualty

            The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom

            Cpl. Alex F. Domion, 21, of Richfield Springs, N.Y., died Oct. 31, as a result of a non-combat related incident in Helmand province, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. 

            This incident is under investigation.

DoD Identifies Army Casualty

            The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom

            Sgt. 1st Class Ryan J. Savard, 29, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., died Oct. 13, in Khanabad District, Afghanistan, from small arms fire while on patrol during combat operations.  He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N. C.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of two Marines who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom

            They died Sept. 15, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. 

            Killed were: 

            Lt. Col. Christopher K. Raible, 40, of Huntingdon, Pa., assigned to Marine Attack Squadron 211, Marine Aircraft Group 13, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward); and 

            Sgt. Bradley W. Atwell, 27, of Kokomo, Ind., assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13, Marine Aircraft Group 13, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). 

            This incident is under investigation.

 Lance Cpl. Christopher P. J. Levy, 21, of Ramseur, N.C., died Dec. 10 of wounds sustained Dec. 7 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

            The Department of Defense announced today recruiting and retention statistics for the active and reserve components for fiscal year 2011.

•     Active Component.

•     Recruiting – Fiscal 2011.  All four active services met or exceeded their numerical accession goals for fiscal year 2011.

o    Army – 64,019 accessions, with a goal of 64,000; 100 percent
o    Navy – 33,444 accessions, with a goal of 33,400; 100 percent
o    Marine Corps – 29,773 accessions, with a goal of 29,750; 100 percent
o    Air Force – 28,518 accessions, with a goal of 28,515; 100 percent

•     Retention.  The Army, Navy, and Marine Corps exceeded their fiscal 2011 retention goals in all categories.  The Air Force achieved 96 percent of its careerist retention goal.

•     Reserve Component.

•     Recruiting – Fiscal 2011.  Five of the six reserve components met or exceeded their numerical accession goals for fiscal year 2011.  The Army National Guard intentionally achieved 95 percent in order to stay within its congressionally authorized end strength.

o    Army National Guard – 50,430 accessions, with a goal of 53,000; 95 percent
o    Army Reserve – 30,087 accessions, with a goal of 28,320; 106 percent
o    Navy Reserve – 8,364 accessions, with a goal of 8,344; 100 percent
o    Marine Corps Reserve – 9,180 accessions, with a goal of 9,157; 100 percent
o    Air National Guard – 7,182 accessions, with a goal of 6,632; 108 percent
o    Air Force Reserve – 9,069 accessions, with a goal of 8,831; 103 percent

•    Attrition.  All reserve components are on target to achieve their fiscal year 2011 attrition goals.  End of fiscal 2011 achievements will be published in the November 2011 report.
