The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of two Marines who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

             They died July 29 while conducting combat operations in Badghis province, Afghanistan.

             Killed were:

             Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan W. Gifford, 34, of Palm Bay, Fla.  He was assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; also,

             Gunnery Sgt. Daniel J. Price, 27, of Holland, Mich.  He was assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Fallen But Not Forgotten – 1st Lt. Sean R. Jacobs, 23, of Redding, Calif., and Sgt. John E. Hansen, 41, of Austin, Texas.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

                 They died July 26 in Khakrez, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when they encountered an enemy improvised explosive device.  These soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

                 Killed were:

1st Lt. Sean R. Jacobs, 23, of Redding, Calif.,

and Sgt. John E. Hansen, 41, of Austin, Texas.

            Pleitez was assigned to 1072nd Transportation Company, 746th Combat Support Battalion, 224th Sustainment Brigade, Van Nuys, Calif.

            They died July 28 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from enemy, small arms fire.  These soldiers were assigned to the 630th Engineer Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, Fort Drum, N.Y.

            Killed were:

            Sgt. 1st Class Bobby L. Estle, 38, of Lebanon, Ohio, and Pfc. Jose Oscar Belmontes, 28, of La Verne, Calif.

            They died July 22 of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit in Pul-E Alam, Afghanistan, with an improvised explosive device.  They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle, Italy.

            Killed were:

            Spc. Justin L. Horsley, 21, of Palm Bay, Fla., and Pfc. Brenden N. Salazar, 20, of Chuluota, Fla.

DOD Approves NATO Medals for Operations in Africa and Libya

            The Department of Defense announced today the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Medal for NATO Operations and Activities in Africa and the NATO Medal for Operations and Activities in Libya have been approved for acceptance and wear by eligible U.S. service members and DoD civilian personnel.

            NATO awards the NATO Medal for NATO Operations and Activities in Africa for service in direct support of one of the following operations or activities:

• North Atlantic Council-approved NATO support activities in relation to the African Union
• Operation ALLIED PROVIDER
• Operation ALLIED PROTECTOR
• Operation OCEAN SHIELD

            NATO awards the NATO Medal for NATO Operations and Activities in Libya for service in direct support of the following operation:

• Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR

            Individuals awarded the NATO Medal for NATO Operations and Activities in Africa or for Libya should consult with their personnel offices for more information on eligibility or to update their personnel files.

Redesigned Transition Assistance Program Announced

 

            Today President Obama announced the launch of the redesigned Transition Assistance Program developed by an interagency team from the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Labor, Education, and Homeland Security as well as the Office of Personnel and Management and the Small Business Administration.

            The revamped program, called Transition GPS, is the first major overhaul of the transition assistance program for military members in nearly 20 years.  The effort began in response to a call from President Obama in August 2011 to ensure all service members are “career ready” when they leave the military.

             ”I applaud the leadership of President Obama to bring together government agencies around the goal of enhancing career opportunities for service members,” said Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta.  ”Our personnel have developed extraordinary technical expertise and world-class leadership skills that are in high demand.  Transition GPS will help military members apply their experience to additional training, formal education, and develop successful civilian careers.”

             ”One of our fundamental responsibilities as a government is to properly prepare and support those serving in our military so they are career ready as they transition back into civilian life.  With this new initiative, we can better ensure veterans receive the care, benefits and employment services they have earned,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.  “This collaborative effort will have an impact well beyond this current generation of individuals returning from combat.”

DOD Announces Recruiting and Retention Numbers for Fiscal 2012, Through June

            The Department of Defense announced today recruiting and retention statistics for the active and reserve components for fiscal 2012, through June.

• Active Component.

• Recruiting.  All four active services met or exceeded their numerical accession goals for fiscal 2012, through June.

• Army — 42,538 accessions, with a goal of 42,250; 101 percent
• Navy — 24,854 accessions, with a goal of 24,848; 100 percent
• Marine Corps — 18,391 accessions, with a goal of 18,346; 100 percent
• Air Force — 21,332 accessions, with a goal of 21,332; 100 percent

• Retention.  The Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force all exhibited strong retention through the ninth month of fiscal 2012.

• Reserve Component.

• Recruiting.  All six reserve components met or exceeded their numerical accession goals for fiscal 2012, through June.

• Army National Guard — 36,508 accessions, with a goal of 35,876; 102 percent
• Army Reserve — 19,918 accessions, with a goal of 19,736; 101 percent
• Navy Reserve — 5,841 accessions, with a goal of 5,841; 100 percent
• Marine Corps Reserve — 6,927 accessions, with a goal of 6,649; 104 percent
• Air National Guard — 6,453 accessions, with a goal of 6,439; 100 percent
• Air Force Reserve — 6,458 accessions, with a goal of 6,458; 100 percent

• Attrition – All reserve components are on target to achieve their fiscal year attrition goals.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. 

            Spc. Krystal M. Fitts, 26, of Houston, Texas, died July 17 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered from indirect fire.  She was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Fallen But Not Forgotten – Senior Chief Aviation Warfare Systems Operator Sean P. Sullivan, 40, of St. Louis, Mo., and Naval Aircrewman (Helicopter) Second Class Joseph P. Fitzmorris, 31, of West Monroe, La., were declared deceased following an extensive search of the wreckage and the surrounding areas of the crash.

The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of two sailors who died in a helicopter crash July 19 in Oman.

            Pfc. Jeffrey L. Rice, 24, of Troy, Ohio, died July 19, in Kandahar, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to the 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.
