This week the Army, Navy and Marine Corps announced decreases in activated reservists while the Air Force and Coast Guard announced an increase.  The net collective result is 235 fewer reservists activated than last week.

At any given time, services may activate some units and individuals while deactivating others, making it possible for these figures to either increase or decrease.  The total number currently on active duty from the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 52,118; Navy Reserve, 4,748; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 9,267; Marine Corps Reserve, 4,754, and the Coast Guard Reserve, 775.  This brings the total National Guard and Reserve personnel currently activated to 71,662, including both units and individual augmentees.

Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens: Bamako (Mali), Political Instability

On March 21, Malian mutineers took control of the presidential palace and closed the country’s land borders and airport.   The radio and television station are off the air.  The borders and airport remain closed.  A curfew was put in place beginning at 6:00 a.m. Thursday, March 22.   Because of the current political instability, the U.S. Embassy’s Consular Section is open for registration and emergency services only.  On Monday, March 26, the Embassy will be closed in honor of a local holiday.   The American International School of Bamako and Liberté A (the French school) will be closed on Friday, March 23, and next week, March 26-30, for Spring Break.   The Embassy encourages all U.S. citizens to continue to shelter in place.  The U.S. Department of State urges all U.S. citizens in Mali to register with the Embassy by enrolling online in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Traveler Program (STEP) at www.travel.state.gov.   You can stay in touch and get Embassy updates by checking the U.S. Embassy Bamako web site. Statement by Pentagon Press Secretary George Little on Iron Dome

“Supporting the security of the State of Israel is a top priority of President Obama and Secretary Panetta.  The United States has previously provided $205 million in support of Israel’s Iron Dome short-range rocket and mortar defense system.  During the rocket attacks earlier this month, the Iron Dome system played a critical role in Israel’s security.  When nearly 300 rockets and mortars were fired at southern Israel, Iron Dome intercepted over 80 percent of the targets it engaged, saving many civilian lives.

“The Department of Defense has been in conversations with the Government of Israel about U.S. support for the acquisition of additional Iron Dome systems and intends to request an appropriate level of funding from Congress to support such acquisitions based on Israeli requirements and production capacity.”
